Weekends are
mostly boring in Tainan with limited options of what to do. Mostly, I end up
having a drink with friends in a local bar nearby. But the weekend of March
09-10, 2019 is an experience I can’t forget so soon.
It
all started with the magnanimous scholarship award from the Chang Hwa Rotary
Educational Foundation late January 2019, which was also an honorary event to
attend. Not long after, I received an invitation for a camping expedition.
Though I wasn’t sure of the experience to expect but I was hopeful and attended
with less expectations and open mind, not realizing the heart-break in stock
for me.
There
are two parts to this experience, first is the people then the activities and
venue. I will first talk about the people because that is the most mesmerizing
and selfless treatment one can ever receive from a large group of people
evenly. Starting from the organizers, team leaders and my team members at no
time did I feel left out or mistreated. This is in spite of my lack of fluency
in speaking and understanding Chinese, everyone I came across patiently
listened and try their best to make me understand or be understood. Politeness
seems to be a tradition and selflessness a way of life. In fact the genuine joy
and love resonating from the heart of my team members reflected in the
collective ideas when designing our flag, creating a group chant, playing games
and even drinking and talking till late night. Indeed, I felt the Rotary slogan
“service
above self”, I couldn’t ask for more.
I
connected with a lot of people on different levels both Taiwanese and my fellow
foreigners. As we started understanding each other and having more fun,
suddenly it was time to leave. It was difficult saying goodbye but we just have
to, hence the heart break.
The
activities were exceptional, well organized and also interesting except for the
opening which was a little boring but necessary though. Attention was paid to
time without compromising fun and satisfaction. Each of the person(s) in-charge
of activity/game were dedicated and executed their job well. The crazy night
was crazy fun and the games were
amazing but the best part was the “towel throw and catch game with water filled
balloon” and “the ping-pong in cup game”. The venue is a serene and perfect
place to avoid city life. Its location in the mountain made the air quality good
and breathing felt so good particularly in the early morning. I really can’t
wait for the next camping!!
In
a special way, I will like to thank all the organizers of this event. It was a
job well done. Also my team leaders, all my team members and all the beautiful
and amazing people who participated. I am very grateful.
